Science

What is science? How does it work? What is all this scientific jargon?
In this page I hope answer all these questions.

What is science?
Science is study of the natural world through empirical observation and experimentation using the scientific method.

Scientific method

  1. Observation of phenomenon.
  2. Research into observed phenomena.
  3. Create hypothesis to explain phenomena. Not what it is, why it is.
  4. Use hypotheses to create testable and falsifiable predictions.
  5. Test predictions.
  6. If predictions are accurate, submit for peer review. If predictions are not accurate, alter hypothesis or go back to 3.
  7. Other scientists in the field examine your hypothesis, predictions, experiment and/or studies and conclusion(s). They will look for any and every error. If they find your hypothesis dose not fit the observations, you predictions do not fit the hypothesis, your experiments and/or studies were flawed or your conclusions do not match the results, go back to 3 or 4.. But if they find no errors you hypothesis.
  8. If other scientists repeat you studies and or experiments. If they find that your results were not flukes (it happens more often than you think) it ether becomes a theory or is bundle with other hypothesise into a larger theory. If your results are flukes, go back to 3.
  9. Review theory in the light of new observations, theories experiments and studies. If the new light reviles errors in the theory alter theory.

Hypothesis, Theory, Law

  • Hypothesis
An hypothesis is a rational explanation for an observation.
  • Theory
A scientific theory is heavily tested explanation of group of observations. Theories are heavily tested and have gone through a the proses of peer review. No single scientists can create a theory, only after years of peer review and experimentation can a theory become a theory.
  • Law
A scientific law is a statement of fact meant to be explained. Scientific laws are simple, universal and can be expressed by a single equation.

  2. [...] Do you need to see a person walking across a beach to know someone walked across a beach or are foot prints in the sand enough? You do not need to see something directly to know it happened. We can see the effects of things and hypothesize their causes. By creating predictions based on those hypotheses and testing those predictions we can come up with a tested explanation for the effects we see. This is what science does, its called the scientific method. [...]
