Taking on Libby (libertarian) bullshit

In this post and other posts in this series I will take on libby (libertarian (aka closeted anarchists)) bullshit. In this first one I will take on the anti-regulation bullshit.

Regulations are tricky things. Somethings are self regulating. For instances television: does the FCC really need to say "No swearing, no sex and no titties!"? No. Television stations will not put certain things on at certain times. But not all markets is self regulating, in fact many markets are not self regulating. Some processes put out byproducts that are bad for the environment. These byproducts need to be properly disposed of so that they do not harm the environment but that costs money.
There lies the problem. Business is about making money, it is about profit. The more money coming in and the less going out the better. Worker safety, decent wages, prober disposal of hazardous or polluting material; all these raise costs, more money goes out and profits go down. This is why we need regulations, to get businesses to the right things when the right things go against the bottom line.
There is a sort of natural selection in the business world. The businesses that make the most money regardless of whether they made it morally or not ill do better as a result business men who only care about the bottom line (profit) or put the bottom line before worker safety, the environment, etc will do better. I am not saying that the people at the top of corporations and businesses are all evil greedy bastards (there are plenty of good people at the top), what I'm saying is people like that have a tendency to float to the top because they are willing to do what has to be done in order to maximize gains and minimize cost.

I think a parallel case can be found in ICT standards, especially those related to data sharing. Without the standards, each company will go to develop their own formats and languages, as it’s much more profitable than adhering to a foreign format.

If that happens, the Internet will be separated into a few sects, each representing a particular company’s format. This essentially refutes the original reason the Internet was created.
