Anglican priest Tim Jones, 41 encouraged the poor in his congregation to shop lift. His rationale behind the statement was that it is better for the poor to shoplift than resort to prostitution, mugging or burglary. When people pointed out "thou shalt not steal" he said: "God's love for the poor is more important than the property rights of the rich"
Shop lifting may not be mugging or burglary but it is still stealing and it does have negative effects on the stores, the people who shop at the stores and society as a whole. Stores loose money on shoplifted goods, that drives up prises which ultimately harms the poor.
Perhaps it would be a better idea to encourage people to give and help out the poor? Maybe.
