1 Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
2 And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
3 And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.
His wife "cant conserve" (how is it automatically her fault? Could it be that hes the one with the futility problem?) so he takes her maid (slave) as a wife?
5 And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.
6 But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thine hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.
7 And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
8 And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.
9 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.
Oh so the maid gets pregnant and the wife (or first wife) get Jealous even though she is the one that said "I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her" and then its apparently okay for her to to "deal hardly" with her and when the made runs away God sends an angel who says "Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands"?
And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.
That's a nice thing to revel to someone "Your son is going to be an antisocial jackass who constantly in fights"
And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.
"I give you this land that you are not in. Cause I like to make trouble that way"
And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.
If child is uncircumcised, he is to be abandoned?
16 And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.
17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?
God will make a 100 year old woman have a child? Could a 100 year old woman even survive child birth?
Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.
Hmm, making decent human beings who he will not later kill in a flood, preventing people eating a fruit of a certain tree, preventing the death of Able, excepting a sacrifice that is not animal. Need I go on?
And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;
Now, why would God need to hide something? Hmm, what is he planing?
I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.
Doesn't God already know? Doesn't God know everything?
(Missed one)
That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?
"Would you kill the good with the evil?" Yes. "Would you judge all justly?" What dose God consider good and righteous? Cause his standards don't seem logical.
Strange that Abraham begs God not to kill innocent people but latter he is willing to sacrifice his son with out question.
Thanks shirhashirim
And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.
But what dose God mean by "righteous"? Noah was considered righteous and he was a drunkard who enslaved his son. Surly he could find 50 good people in Sodom, if he tried.
26 And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.
27 And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the LORD, which am but dust and ashes:
28 Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it.
29 And he spake unto him yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty's sake.
30 And he said unto him, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.
Again what dose God mean by "righteous"?
What is God so angry about? What was the sin? What did they do that angered God?
1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;
2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.
3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.
So angels are human in appearance and eat?
4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:
5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
The bible would have us beleve that all the men in the city? Realy? Come on.
7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.
8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
"Rape my doughters, not my house quests" This guy is suposed to be righteous. What dose that mean then?
Its not wicked to gange rape woman yet its is wicked to gange rape men?
And they where angels, couldn't they defend them selfs?
11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.
They couldn't do that in the first place?
For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.
I though God was going to destroy the city?
24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;
25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
God killed, he killed every man woman child and animal in the city with fire. They all burned to death.
But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
"Don't look back or I will turn you salt! Bitch."
32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.
I don't care how drunk they got him, no normal father would ever have sex with his daughters. In fact is seems far more likely that Lot deceived his daughters into having sex with him. Its more likely that he was a pervert who wanted to have sex with his daughters.
This is the righteous Lot? God has a sick definition of righteous.
2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.
3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife.
4 But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, LORD, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation?
5 Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this.
Wait! Abraham and Sarah lie to Abimelech sayng that Abraham and Sarah are brother ans sister and when Abraham wants to get with Sarah God says "thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife." and he hadn't touched her yet. What the hell?
6 And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.
7 Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.
Okay so its wrong to think certain things?
Did God know Abraham and Sarah set him up? It doesn't look like it.
9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.
10 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing?
11 And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake.
Oh so with out the fear of God people will do anything they want to others? Bullshit!
And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.
Oh that's sick. I thought incest was supposed to be wrong in eyes of God.
And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.
Wait! Abimelech was the victim and he had to pay? Oh, that's wrong.
Wait, servants as in slaves?
17 So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children.
18 For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife.
Oh so not only was the victim punished but his family and servants too.

Have fun. Just be mindful of the Yiddish proverb: “If God wants to punish someone, He teaches him a few words of Hebrew”
Well when dealing with the bible its inevitable that you have to get into Hebrew. I’d have to get into Hebrew eventually.
Well, if you’re that serious about it, may I reccommend
“Beginning Biblical Hebrew” by Mark David Futato? I’ve never used it, but it’s now used by the one who taught me Hebrew and he’s very satisfied with it. It’s also well suited for self-study as it doesn’t take too large steps.
Futato himself seems to be some kind of born again/evangelical/conservative Christian. Not the kind of believer I’d expect to dive into Hebrew but apparently these litteral believers tend to do just that…
